Physics : Best Practices
Title of the Best Practice: Energy Conservation
Energy club is started in 2017 by the Department of Physics.
Objective:
-
Instilling energy-saving habits in students
The Context:
-
The programme is led by Science students. The Department of Physics guides the students. Every year, some energy conservation activities are carried out.
The Need:
-
In this era of modernization, the use of energy has increased massively.
-
Thus, it is important to conserve energy because if it is not done, one day will come when there will be no natural energy source left on earth to use.
-
Conservation of electricity is necessary to save the environment and the Earth from warming.
-
Saving energy usually reduces living expenses. When the public consumes less fuel or electricity, decreasing demand causes prices to drop.
-
As a result, we must conserve energy for the future. Everybody should take responsibility for energy-saving methods.
-
The use of Solar lights, LED bulbs must beincreased.
Energy Conservation Practice:
-
Department of Physics has planned an energy-saving plan for the institution, as well as a time-bound plan for energy conservation.
-
As a result, the institution has implemented a mechanism to use renewable energy and has installed a 25 KWH Solar Power Station.
-
Annual Energy audit is made mandatory.
-
Our Energy conservation practices include the College replacing all tube lights with LED tubes,LED bulbs are the most energy-efficient lighting option available.
-
LED tubes consume 75% less energy than incandescent tubes. LED tubes have a 25-times longer lifespan than traditional incandescent tubes.100% of lighting requirement is met through LED.
-
Energy conservation practices and eco-friendly habits are instilled in students and staff by reminding them of simple things that are extremely effective in lowering electricity consumption, such as students and staff turning off all lights, appliances, and electronics when not in use.
Raising Awareness of Energy Conservation:
-
Sustainability initiatives, energy savings, and greenhouse gas inventory metrics are all high priorities for a college, and even more so for our students. When implementing a master energy plan or an energy-saving renovation project, there is an excellent opportunity to gain student support for campus sustainability.
-
Because most energy improvements take place behind the scenes, raising awareness of these projects can have significant benefits, such as encouraging desirable behaviour on how a campus building can and should be used to contribute to a college's carbon footprint reduction goals.
-
Rising utility rates are an unavoidable fact of life. Electricity, gas, and water prices will rise by a few percentage points each year, just like inflation. Utility rate increases, whether all at once or over time, can have a significant impact on the college's operations budget.
Evidence of Success:
-
If there is sufficient ventilation in the classroom, turn off the fans.
-
Dedicated work by the volunteers has ensured that students themselves switch off lights and fans when they move out of rooms, establishing a culture of energy conservation.
-
Physics students have developed a habit of switching off electrical equipment when not using them.
-
Make use of energy efficient lighting bulbs.
-
Unplug appliances not plugged into powerstrips(Like TVs, Refrigerators, ACs, tea/coffeepots, printers, and chargers etc.)
-
Use CFL bulbs and LED bulbs.
-
Activate power management features on laserprinter.
Problems Encountered:
-
Due to Covid-19 pandemic we couldn’t conduct awareness programs.
-
Because of semester system, there is no sufficient time to organize too many programs.
Some important Activities done by the Energy Conservation Club 9th November 2018:
-
All the Physics students participated in field visits. The Physics Department faculty explained how to use various solar equipment.
-
The Physics department faculty explained how to generate energy using windmills.
Activities:
Department of Physics conducted seminar on “Renewal Energy Technology in Power Generation” on 9th February 2018.
